Festival 2023-Sacred Dance Guild 65th Anniversary Event

* simple * sacred * dance *

JOIN US at the beautiful campus of Connecticut College in New London, CT with an excursion back to Jacob’s Pillow – where the Festival experience began back in 1958…. This three day festival of sacred dance will take us on a journey – past present and future – celebrating 65 revolutions around the sun!

As we personally, collectively and globally re-enter our physical connections following the limitations during the worldwide pandemic, we do so with deep gratitude and the intention to keep things SIMPLE! We will explore space and harmony – both internally and externally – and dance in to discover the many portals to the sacred that are open to us all!

This three day experience will be SIMPLE it will be SACRED it will be DANCE!

Creative Choreography

Friday and Saturday morning will be devoted to a creative choreography process that will take us on a journey of discovery into the festival theme – Space Harmony: Portal to the Sacred!

CREATIVE CHOREOGRAPHY | MARYLEE HARDENBERGH
During our Creative Choreography times Marylee will guide participants in a process of exploring harmony in many spaces and places that will result in a dance to be offered as a “pop up” dance on the excursion to Jacob’s Pillow on Saturday, July 29, 2023! During this process participants will take a deep dancing dive and explore their connection from the inside out and from the outside in.

Marylee has been creating site-specific dances for over 30 years in such places as a sewage treatment plant, an Aerial Lift bridge, on skyscrapers, on cherry pickers at a Farmers Market, on a bombed-out Parliament Building in Sarajevo, Bosnia, on a clock tower on the Volga in Russia, on a Mediterranean beach in Israel with a Palestinian community, and on oyster harvesting boats on the Housatonic River. She has worked with community and trained dancers all over the globe, and have turned Bobcat loaders, fire trucks, Coast Guard and US Army Corps boats into dancers! We’ll be excited to see what additional “dancers” arrive at this Sacred Dance Guild 65th Anniversary Celebration as we explore the spaces, the places and the portals both internally and at the awesome campus of Connecticut College and the amazing Jacob’s Pillow!

Helena encourages her dancers to experience dance as a moving prayer and meditation, as a daily practice indoors or in nature. She studies several energy modalities and is a certified practitioner of the EMF Balancing Technique.

Sharings

“Sharings” are a cherished festival tradition, stretching back the the SDG’s very first festivals 65 years ago! A sharing is an informal time to present a dance you have been working on to other festival participants. We provide the space, the technology and a supportive audience. You bring your dance, your music and your costuming, as you need. Festival participants are usually happy to offer feedback, if you’d like. Sharings are often some of the most inspiring moments of festival. This year the “traditional” Sharing time will be 7:30 – 8:30 on Friday, July 28th. It will be OPEN to all and somewhat informal!

Remember – there are other ways to share our experience at festival too! Anytime there isn’t something specific going on – YOU can share with others – in any way you would like! Teach a specific dance, explore an idea for choreography, try out something together… ??
