From the Soul: DREAMCATCHER

August 23 @ 6:30 pm August 25 @ 7:30 pm UTC+0

JOIN us for a sacred dance experience. We are so fortunate to have Claire Elizabeth Barratt travelling to Ottawa from her current home in North Carolina to facilitate a Motion Sculpture Movement Meditation Workshop culminating in a Rhizomatic Collective Unconscious Dreamcatcher performance installation at Remic Rapids on the Ottawa River at John Ceprano’s beautiful balanced rock sculptures. This work is a sculptural installation and performance that draws on traditions of weaving and the Native American dreamcatcher to express recurring forms in nature of the mycorrhizal fungi under the forest floor and the neural networks of the human brain – and how our collective unconscious plays out in archetypal symbols, myths and dreams.

Beginning Friday evening (6:30 – 9:30) and Saturday (10:00 – 5:00) Claire will lead us in an investigation and exploration of Motion Sculpture as a form of meditation and discovery. This movement is gradual and incremental, holding long periods of stillness. One’s relationship with time and space becomes both expanded and hyper-focused at the same time. There is a sense of transcending the Self as though inhabiting pure form and energy. We will incorporate Archetypal Gesture work to provide emotional intention. These gestures were developed as part of a theatrical training method by Michael Chekhov in the 1900s. They assume the axiom of the body being the center for emotion and communication.

We will also use Vocal Chanting as an open channel for vibration and sound. The use of chant is an ancient and primal human tool for community and sacred ritual. The voice is a part of the body and thus an invitation to unify body, mind and soul.

All of these creative methods will be integrated in the action of weaving the Dreamcatcher!

On Sunday morning all are invited (optional) to offer a Dreamcatcher Mediation as part of the Sunday Worship service (10:00 – 11:00 am) at Bells Corners United Church and on Sunday evening (6:00 – 8:00 pm) to participate in an offering as a public meditation with the Dreamcatcher Installation at Remic Rapids.

Registration: email wendy.morrell@sympatico.ca or call 613-726-1375 for details.

Artists Statement of Cultural Intention

I worked for several summer seasons on the Qualla Boundary / Cherokee Indian Reservation as a dancer for ‘Unto These Hills’ – a grand outdoor drama telling the history of the Tsa-La-Gi (Cherokee) people. During that time the cast were given resident status on the reservation and worked along side tribal members. Some of the tribal members offered the opportunity to learn from them the craft of making Dreamcatchers. My intentions in basing the structure of this artistic work on the Dreamcatcher are integral to the complex subject matter of the project. They are rooted in gratitude of this lineage and acknowledgement of ancestral land. Indigenous Nations throughout the world have a lifestyle of respect for their natural environments, living as part of the ecosystems they provide.
