Sacred Sunday - A Butoh Exploration!
Date: August 14, 2022-
Location: 7:30 pm EDT - check local times!!

The Sacred Dance Guild’s Sacred Sunday program is shifting – like the rest of the world!!    For the two years of the pandemic we hosted a gathering each Sunday evening.  As our global experience is re-emerging we are moving our Sacred Sundays to monthly for the time being – generally it will be the 2nd Sunday of the month (but do stay connected as we might have “pop up” Sacred Sundays or change the week due to other events!)   We are continuing to host these on line gatherings to be  “Socially Present” while “Physically Distant“ because we can – no longer because we must!     These live from our living room sessions are free, informal, intimate and interactive sharings and are open to participants who want to connect in this way.

To register send email to pres@sacreddanceguild.org with “Sacred Sunday – Butoh” in the title.

This Sacred Sunday will find us exploring the interesting style of “Butoh” as an expression of the sacred!   As many of you know, Marilyn Green, Artistic Director of the Trinity Movement Choir, uses Butoh inspired movement as the style that the choir has used for many years.    One of Marilyn’s creations “Humankind”, a 45 minute performance piece exploring the experience of refugees in our world, was presented via video during the pandemic at the Parliament of the World’s Religions conference in August 2021.  Marilyn is now ready to “show” this piece at an in person performance at St. Paul’s Church in New York City on September 22, 2022.  Stay tuned for additional details on that performance.

We are thrilled to have a short (11 minute) video to share of Mariko Endo at her performance at the New York Butoh Institute Festival in 2018.  Mariko will also be performing in Humankind in September.  Mariko says “My primary goal is working towards World Peace. I draw people’s attention using the Introspective approach.  As plants use photosynthesis, humans are attracted to an innate feeling of peace.  It is urgent to reconnect our natural intelligence to the Light. I perform and teach Dance as a journey of intuitive expression.  There is an inborn sense of texture in each individual’s mind which cannot be expressed in words, but rather in states of being. Your odyssey is Butoh itself.  Our methodology is spreading the awareness of internal/external connections with Nature, Space, and Self through Art.   Mariko will be in Japan at the time of this Sacred Sunday but will join us in person on Zoom if possible.

We will also watch other short clips of Butoh and Butoh inspired movement including clips from pieces from the Trinity Movement Choir.     AND – as we all want to put this in our bodies , we’ll have an opportunity to try this out personally!  Via the magic of video, we’ll experience a few Butoh movement “exercises” with well known Butoh facilitators to see how this form informs us personally!

AND – if that’s not enough – we have Debbie Danbrook, master of the Shakuhachi flute (and the creator of all of the music for the 45 minute Humankind piece!) who will play for us in person (live on Zoom from her home in Toronto, Canada of course!) as we explore our own Butoh movements listening to her haunting music!

The Sacred Dance Guild is blessed to have amazing facilitators gifting their presence with us leading these Sacred Sunday sessions.  During this period when we are emerging from a time where our lives changed in ways we couldn’t have imagined, we continue our personal, collective and global mind/body/spirit connection.  We are grateful for those who lead us on these journeys of discovery as we dance on waves of grace together.  We will be using ZOOM for Sunday’s sessions.
