This week we will be joined by Carla DeSola as we honour Mother’s Day and celebrate all of the ways that we are mothered and that we ourselves mother others. During this year where we have all reflected on our lives and how they have changed unexpectedly, it is particularly relevant to consider the concept of “mother”. How have you been mothered during these turbulent times? How have you mothered others in their time of need? How does dance and movement mother you? For many of us in the Sacred Dance Guild, Carla is the “mother” of sacred dance and has been a treasured living legacy of the SDG for many years. We are grateful to have her with us on this Mother’s Day as we all reflect and dance together on the role of mothers in our lives.
For this session we will move through some videos of past works that Carla has facilitated from “Beyond Words – An Interfaith Ritual for Peace” created in 2003, a portion of a class from the 2008 50th Anniversary Festival and part of a class from the 2020 first Virtual Festival. Participants can feel free to witness, move from your chair or dance along with the intentions on the video – whatever calls you is how you should participate! We will end the session with an “Open Mike” time for conversation, comments and questions. We would ask you each to bring something that symbolizes “mother” to you! Anything at all – see what is in your space that you would like to share at the end of our session as we take this journey together!
Carla De Sola
, a pioneer in liturgical dance, is a dancer, choreographer, teacher and author. She has a diploma in dance from the Juilliard School and an MA in Theology and the Arts from the Pacific School of Religion (PSR). Carla founded the Omega Liturgical Dance Company, in residence at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, N.Y.C., from 1976 to 2008, and currently directs the Omega West Dance Company in Berkeley, CA. Omega was founded to express the spiritual-human-social-healing
dimensions of dance, exploring inner aspects of movement integrated with the world’s spiritual resources. Carla taught classes through PSR, and the Center for the Arts, Religion & Education (CARe) at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, for over twenty five years. In 2015 Omega West Dance Company presented “Beyond Words: An Interfaith Ritual for Peace” for the Parliament of the World’s Religions, Salt Lake City, Utah.
The Sacred Dance Guild is blessed to have Carla gifting her presence with us leading this Sacred Sunday session. During this time when our lives have changed in ways we couldn’t have imagined, continuing our personal, collective and global mind/body/spirit connection is so important. We are grateful for those who lead us on these journeys of discovery as we dance on waves of grace together. We will be using ZOOM for Sunday’s sessions.
