On November 22nd, Marcia Millar will lead us through learning the crazy dance craze to “JERUSALEMA”! What is that you ask! Well – This is a song written in 2019 by Master KG and Nomcebo Zikode from South Africa that has gone around the world, has been endorsed by presidents and priests and has become the sound of the pandemic for millions across southern Africa. The simple dance routine to the song has provided an uplifting soundtrack for difficult times and has now been streamed more than 60m times on Spotify, The upbeat song is a lamentation for God to take the singer to the heavenly city. The track topped the South African charts in December 2019 but in February, as lockdowns began to seem like a possibility, it was a group of friends in Angola who shot a video dancing to the song that sparked the global trend. Emotional videos of healthcare workers in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Italy, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the US, Australia and Puerto Rico have become an uplifting source of hope for patients fighting Covid-19, as some countries experience a second wave. Although it has “religious-leaning” lyrics, “Jerusalema” is an upbeat disco-house track, containing “deep”, “spiritual”, gospel lyrics. An uplifting, fun and joyful time to dance together with Marcia!
Marcia L. Miller began dancing at the age of 5 in Escondido California and dance has been a part of her life ever since. Although Marcia has a degree in accounting, dance has been the major focus of her life. Marcia choreographed her first musical, Oklahoma, in high school and she has since choreographed over 40 musicals for high schools, colleges, and local community theater groups. Marcia loves theater and has also performed and stared in many musicals, her favorite being the lead role in Call Me Madam. She is currently the choreographer for the Connecticut Gilbert & Sullivan Society and cannot wait to get back to live theater. Marcia was the treasurer for the Sacred Dance Guild for 9 years and loved her time on the board. Marcia teaches dance at The Dance Extension and is the advisor for the Junior Company, a performance group that is part of the Community Dance Ensemble, a non-profit outreach and community service dance group. Marcia is the Office Manager for the United Methodist Church of Gales Ferry and directs a dance group at the church, the Jubilation Dancers. The Jubilation Dancers dance during worship throughout the year and perform in the church’s annual Christmas Concert. Marcia also loves singing and ringing hand bells at her church. Marcia is married to her husband Ron, a retired submarine Naval Officer, and lives in Gales Ferry, Connecticut. She has one son Charlie and a wonderful daughter-in-law, Colleen.
The Sacred Dance Guild is blessed to have Marcia gifting her presence with us leading this Sacred Sunday session. During this time when our lives have changed in ways we couldn’t have imagined, continuing our personal, collective and global mind/body/spirit connection is so important. We are grateful for those who lead us on these journeys of discovery as we dance on waves of grace together. We will be using ZOOM for Sunday’s sessions.
